Interactive Brokers has officially launched ForecastEx LLC, its CFTC-regulated subsidiary, which started operations on August 1, 2024. This new platform allows eligible clients from select countries to engage in trading Forecast Contracts, a novel financial instrument focused on upcoming economic data releases and climate indicators.

ForecastEx provides a unique trading avenue for investors looking to hedge against or speculate on the outcomes of significant economic and climatic events. These contracts offer a direct mechanism for investors to shield their portfolios from volatility linked to key indicators or climate patterns.

Also, Thomas Peterffy, Founder and Chairman of Interactive Brokers, emphasized the platform’s strategic importance: “Businesses and investors must continuously reevaluate their expectations to try to determine whether their investment and business strategies fit optimally with unfolding economic, demographic, and climate trends. ForecastEx markets will reflect the consensus probabilities of market participants that certain levels of future economic or climate measures will fall within specific ranges.”

The Forecast Contracts function by allowing investors to bet on the occurrence of specific events. For instance, an investor anticipating a rise in the US Consumer Price Index beyond a certain threshold can purchase a “yes” contract. Conversely, if they predict the event will not occur, they can buy a “no” contract. Prices for these contracts range between $0.02 and $0.99, with their values fluctuating based on market participants’ shifting assessments of probability. Upon the event’s resolution, the contract settles at either $1 for a correct prediction or $0 for an incorrect one.

Eligible Interactive Brokers clients can access Forecast Contracts through the IBKR ForecastTrader platform, utilizing their existing login credentials. ForecastEx aims to expand its offerings internationally and address more localized and global issues as it grows. The availability of contracts will be contingent on the presence of credible and impartial arbiters for event resolution.
