IC Markets (EU) has been fined €200,000 by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) for “knowingly and intentionally” violating leverage regulations. The penalty follows the revelation that IC Markets (EU) offered leverage levels of up to 1000:1 by onboarding clients through an offshore entity, even though European Union regulations cap leverage at 30:1.

CySEC’s announcement today highlights that such practices contravene the rules designed to protect retail investors from excessive risk. “CySEC takes any misconduct by supervised entities seriously and is determined to halt non-compliant operations to enhance investor protection and foster responsible growth within the investment sector,” stated Dr. George Theocharides, Chairman of CySEC.

IC Markets has contested the ruling, announcing plans to appeal. A company spokesperson said that CySEC is using biased information from a former employee to make its decision. “CySEC’s decision, dated July 19, 2024, is flawed and based on unfounded allegations from a disgruntled ex-employee rather than objective evidence. We believe this decision undermines the fairness and transparency of the regulatory process,” the spokesperson said.

The company further criticized CySEC for allegedly ignoring robust audited evidence and for a pattern of selective enforcement. IC Markets emphasized its commitment to challenging the fine through the appeal process.

CySEC’s fine reflects its ongoing vigilance in ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and protecting investor interests. The regulator’s announcement noted that IC Markets had previously faced similar violations in 2021 and had promised corrective actions, which CySEC found insufficient.

This recent penalty underscores the regulatory body’s commitment to enforcing stringent rules and maintaining market integrity amidst ongoing scrutiny of broker practices across the financial industry.
